    Creating an Atheist Society
    Saturday, June 03, 2006
In the last few months, I have been discussing in a few blogs, the idea of creating an organised community for promotion of atheism and also for a way of getting likeminded poeple together to discuss their ideas and beliefs. Now I have found my way of contribution to such a cause.

In my university with hundreds of societies and clubs, there is no club or society dedicated to atheism. So I thought I could do something about it. From next semester, I will be creating the Atheist Society of UNSW. This would also help me to find like minded people, for friendship (Almost all my friends are theists).

I do know a couple of people who are already interested in helping me, however the challenge would be to invite some famous atheists to our (future) club, for seminars and talks.

    I am already excited.

Call it the Realist Society. That might get you bigger interest.

I think Atheist Society sounds better. Not every atheist is a realist.

We have an atheist society. It's called a secular government. ; )

But seriously, good luck with your club. I hope you get a good turnout.
Try to keep it positive and do something for the community. A lot of atheist groups just end up being bitchfests and protest groups and spend all their time trying to get roadside memorials taken down. It's nice to see atheist organizations doing charity or adopting highways and the like. -JJ

Didn't realize you were in Australia.

Still, this is a great blog. I just found you. I'm going to blogroll you and check back daily for a while. Lots of great material here and I dig your sense of humor.

      Live well. -JJ

This is a great idea! When I was at university, there were no atheist groups, but there were PLENTY of Christian ones. Your group will infuse a bit of balance :-)

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

      All the best

Realists personally reminds me too much of Raelians! Good idea Roya, I participated in my university's atheist group a little when I was an undergraduate and it was nice to be surrounded by likeminded people every once and awhile (it was in the south, bible belt).

It's all good and fun to pow-wow with the other sane people at your university, but maybe it's time for all of us to take some risks. Perhaps, if there are any Christian or nondenominational theist clubs there, you could set up a debate. You could rent out a lecture hall, or if there is a public assembly, have the debate there. With a bit of witty advertising you could have a great turnout. All sorts of agnostics, deists, or general questioning people could show up and listen to you talk. You'd show all in attendance that we atheists aren't so bad, which is preferable to sitting around and bitching about the state of the world. And besides, the religious fools would be intellectually challenged for once in their lives. You might even convince a few of them to sit in on the club and give their thoughts on the matters at hand. Anything to destroy the theist monopoly on debate, values and beliefs in the public square is a must. Good luck with the club!

Yes stand up for hopelessness. Stand up for transhumanism. Stand up for a cyborg nation of non dreamers and cynics.

You can find one model in BF Skinner's "Walden II". There are some communities that try to adapt such behaviorist thinking. One is Los Horcones in Mexico.

      "1. Are you anti-religious?

No, we are not opposed to religion. We are opposed to religous people who discriminate against others. People who fight with others because of religious beliefs. People who compete to get more followers for their religion. In Los Horcones this is not considered communitarian behavior."

There is another one in Virginia

I go to UNSW and i am overly enthusiastic to joining in your quest . As a fellow atheist i am too often confrounted by the dominant religous groups on campus and i wonder, where is mine. It's also time to show any fence sitters on campus that we are real and have valid points. Uni is a time for some big desision, why not have the opertunity to get all the different views.
